Beyond Mary and Salomé

"We don't see things as they are we see them as we are" Nais

Artist or exhibit?  These raw images of women pose the question that Anne Vinogradoff answers superbly through her interpretation of dancers in a strip club.   Through her work with the women performers Anne has focused on the point beyond the sexual being that makes each of these women unique. The artist challenges the label that morality has so often attached to the sensual dancing woman - bad or sinful equals woman.  Anne captures and displays, with delicate vision, the beauty and complexity of the female form and challenges the socially stereotypical negative view of using the female body as an exhibit for entertainment.

In her book Anne skillfully draws on religious, philosophical and medical commentary to add dialogue to her tantalizing glimpses of portions of women’s bodies. In a chronological study from 1000 to 1950 the artist takes quotes and references from sources that represented the wisdom of the day to further explore the dogma that surrounds women in this domain.

The result is thought provoking and offers a stunning insight that may make you question your view of how women’s bodies are portrayed and understood.  Anne dares to challenge the previously unchallenged, to turn observation into understanding and prejudice into acceptance.  The black and white photography levels the playing field and allows focus to remain firmly on the female form.
